The concept of a physical, visual model of Fraction Islands® began with Dr. Rebecca S. Nelson, who invented the original island area model for use in elementary classrooms and in teacher education classes at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana, where she taught from 1971 to 1987.

The "Teaching with Fraction Islands®" manual was authored by

Dr. Alice I. Robold, Sandra L. Canter and Nancy A. Kitt. Combined, these individuals have taught mathematics for more than 99 years. Dr. Robold taught mathematics at Ball State University from 1960 to 1998 and has been published in many professional journals. Sandra Canter has more than 30 years of teaching experience from kindergarten to college graduate levels, including special education and is the recipient of an outstanding University Teaching Award from Ball State University, and the Presidential Award for Science and Mathematics Teaching. Nancy Kitt has taught junior high, high school and university level mathematics and has earned several awards for her excellent teaching. The authors' concepts help children shift their thinking from cardinal numbers to rational numbers, resulting in relative thinking.

Fraction Islands® is a registered trademark of Pathfinder Services, Inc. The Manufacturing Division of Pathfinder Services began producing and promoting this product in 1997.
